Please join me for bi monthly support groups as we discuss what it's like to love and live with dogs struggling with fears and anxieties and how we can help each other cope, and help our dogs feel safe and supported along the way.
This week we will be talking about separation related behavior problems. Whether you have a pandemic puppy who hasn't yet learned to be alone an adult dog who who has suffered with separation anxiety for some time or somewhere in the middle. I want to help you understand some of the basics and feel more prepared to take on the challenges of working on this, often daunting, behavior challenge. I also want to help you find other people who are struggling to find a community and feel less isolated. I myself have a dog with separation anxiety, he is (mostly) recovered but I can relate to everything you are going through.
I have been a separation anxiety specialist for 4 years, helping dogs overcome this sometimes debilitating behavior challenge. Separation related behavior problems in dogs can leave humans extremely isolated, feeling trapped in their homes, unsure how to proceed. Advice on the internet and even from behavior professionals is often confusing and contradictory.
Some topics we will discuss:
- It isn't your fault. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.
- Ways to manage alone time so you don't feel so isolated.
- How to help family and friends understand why its so important to help your dog and why they won't just get over it.
- Recognizing signs and when to get professional help.
- Is Daycare a good option?
- Should I send my dog away to a trainer?
- Why to avoid punishment
- How can we help dogs in shelter & rescue situations?
